Online Dating Profile Guidelines
If you are really serious about meeting someone online and establishing a meaningful relationship with that person, it is essential that you follow a few simple rules to ensure a happy outcome for all. The most important thing you must do is fill out your profile in a totally honest, truthful, yet captivating way. You may be tempted to embellish your profile a bit and be less than truthful, but this will have disastrous results.
Treat This Like a Job Search
Think of your dating profile the same way you think of your resume when applying for a job. If you’re not truthful on your resume chances are it will be discovered, and you won’t get the job. And if you manage to lie and your way clear to landing the job, you probably won’t be successful, and you’ll lose the job. The same principals apply to your dating profile. So be sure to be truthful and thoughtful when completing your profile.
Knock Their Socks Off
The purpose of the profile is to grab the attention of your prospective suitor, stop them dead in their tracks with your appearance, your intelligence and your personality. The way to do this is to be as unique as possible without going overboard. It’s somewhat of a fine line you’ll have to walk, but if you do it right you’ll get the results you’re hoping for. Here are some tips.
What's Your Handle?
Your profile really starts at registration. The first thing you will want to do is create a meaningful screen name when you register. This is the virtual name that identifies you on the dating website. (Hint: you probably don’t want to use your real first and last name, like BobSmith. One big advantage of online dating is the anonymity you have while searching for a match.)
An attractive screen name could enhance your chances of getting noticed and finding the perfect date. Come up with a screen name that fits your interests or your personality. So, if Bob Smith is a fireman by trade, his screen name could be “LovesToPlayWithFire.”
Also at registration you will have to enter an email address. It’s probably a good idea to create a new email address for the purpose of communicating with online suitors. You don’t want to reveal yourself online by using your personal email address.
A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words
Probably the most important thing you can do to get noticed is to upload a photo of yourself. Think about it. Would you bother reading someone’s profile with no photo? Probably not. Neither do other potential dates. Correct or not, people make assumptions about why there is no photo: either the person is homely, or the person is not really serious about meeting someone through the internet, or the person has 3 eyes and 2 heads. And if you are worried that your boss or your ex will see your photo and recognize you, get over it. What the heck are they doing on a dating site anyway?
Dress for Success
When you chose a photo, remember what you are trying to accomplish – you want to attract someone and get them to want to date you. Make sure your photo is flattering, current, and in good taste. Don’t treat this like the photos you upload to Facebook to amuse your friends and family, or to impress your old high school chums and your college drinking buddies. This photo needs to be the best looking version of you it can be.
While a photo of you in a business suit may look great for a resume, you’ll want your profile photo to look interesting and say something about you. If you want to convey that you are fun, take a photo with a beach or park in the background. If you want to convey that you like motorcycles, take one on the bike. You get the idea. Just make sure you are well groomed, dressed neatly, solo and SMILE.
The next most important component of your online profile is your headline. It could be humorous, witty or profound and grab the attention of the browser and make them want to check out your profile. Avoid headlines that are overused and cliché like “Looking for Romance” or “SWM seeking SWF”. Try your best to distinguish yourself from the crowd.
To Tell The Truth
The last profile tip is to insert as much quality information about you as you can. Don’t embellish and absolutely don’t lie. You are looking for a date, a relationship, a partner, a spouse. You want that person to be looking for the “real you”, not some made up version of you. So really think about all of the qualities that make you special and include them. If you can’t think of any, ask a good friend to help you identify some. Your good qualities that are so hard for you to identify are obvious to people who care about you.
Be clear with what you like, what you don’t like, what you are interested in, what you like to do. Again, originality is key here. Remember, you want to stand out from the crowd. So don’t use tired phrases like, “enjoys a good time. “ Find a unique and original way to say it. You might say instead, “I see every day as a gift, and make it a point to enjoy everything life has to offer.” Get the difference? If you take time to write something meaningful, you will capture someone’s attention and hold it.
If you follow these simple guidelines when filling out your profile you’ve done everything in your power to attract a person who will be genuinely interested in meeting you.
